Frequently Asked Questions

💡 What is Classical Pilates?

It’s a method of movement created by Joseph Pilates, designed to improve strength, flexibility, control and posture. We teach the original, full Classical system, using matwork, specialised spring-based apparatus (like the Reformer, Tower and Chair) and other apparatus like the ladder barrel and spine corrector. It’s suitable from teenage years right through to retirement.

💡 Who is Pilates for?

Pilates benefits anyone who wants to move better and feel stronger. That includes:

  • People returning after injury, surgery or pregnancy
  • Desk workers, tradespeople and active professionals
  • Athletes and dancers looking to enhance performance
  • Anyone managing pain, instability or hypermobility
  • Those looking to age with strength and confidence
  • Humans who just want to feel good in their body!

💡 I’m new. Where should I start?

Start with a Private session. It helps you:

  • Teach you the basics safely
  • Understand your goals or any limitations
  • Place you in the right class or offer tailored sessions

All sessions are 50- 55-minute duration and shorter sessions can be arranged to suit your needs.

💡 What are the different types of classes?

Semi-Private

Group Reformer Plus (max 4)

Group Mat Plus (max 8)

💡 Do I need to be fit to start?

No. Pilates meets you where you are and helps build you up. Whether you’re starting from scratch or experienced, we adapt to your level.

💡 What should I wear?

  • Comfortable clothes like leggings and fitted T-shirts
  • There should be no Zips on pockets or sweatshirts as they damage the equipment.
  • Jewellery should be removed (to protect the item and the equipment)
  • Socks preferred (barefoot is also allowed)
  • Hair tied back

💡 Do I need to bring a mat?

Only if attending a community-based mat class. We recommend using a mat at least 1.5cm thick to cushion your spine. A yoga mat is too thin.

💡 I’ve got back pain or medical issues. Can I still come?

Yes – many of our students have conditions like back pain, osteoporosis or hypermobility. We’ll tailor your programme to suit. We may ask for medical clearance before starting.

💡 I’ve been referred by a physio or doctor – what now?

Great! We offer a Medical Referral Scheme with discounted rates. Just let us know who referred you, and we’ll guide you through getting started.

💡 I’m pregnant / just had a baby. Is Pilates OK?

It’s usually fine to exercise during pregnancy but we ask that you follow the guidance from Pelvic Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy. As there is more risk in the first trimester, we suggest that you wait until 2nd trimester to start Pilates. 1-1 sessions when pregnant are best so that we can modify your workout appropriately. We have teachers experienced in post-natal movement and again a 1-1 is best before being considered for a group class.

💡 Why don’t you use music in class?

Joseph Pilates believed in total concentration. Music can distract from alignment, breathing and rhythm – so instead, we focus on the natural rhythm of movement.

💡 What is the “Powerhouse”?

It’s the core of every Pilates movement – a 360-degree zone around your trunk, supported by your deep abdominals, inner thighs and glutes. It stabilises the body while allowing movement elsewhere.

💡 Why do I have to pre-book? Can’t I drop in?

We keep class sizes small to maintain quality and safety. Drop-ins make that difficult.

💡 Will I get bored doing the same exercises?

No. While the Classical sequence has a set order, your body changes daily. As you progress, the same exercises challenge you differently – that’s the beauty of it.

💡 How long do lesson packs last?

Lesson packs (5 or 10) are valid for up to 3 months. We can extend this in exceptional cases – just ask.

💡 What if I miss a class?

Please give at least 24 hours’ notice via the booking system. No-shows and late cancellations are non-refundable.

💡 Are your teacher training courses CIMSPA recognised?

The content of our courses map to the CIMSPA Professional standard for Pilates based matwork. Our courses also meet the requirements for a recognised Pilates school by Pilates Teacher Association www.pilatesteacherassociation.org

💡 How is your training different from others?

Many courses offer “Pilates-based” training. We teach the full Classical method – as Joseph intended – with highly experienced tutors, hands-on learning, and full use of apparatus. No shortcuts or weekend certifications.
